Di Maria Saga Almost Over?

After one season at Manchester United, the much-maligned Angel Di Maria is reportedly set to sign with Paris St. Germain for an alleged £44.2m. The Argentinian played a total of 27 games for the Red Devils and scored 4 goals across all competitons. This was somewhat offset by his eleven assists however the 27 year old was used sparsely towards the end of the Premier League season.

Di Maria was photographed earlier in Qatar as he prepared for his medical prior to signing. The contract itself is set to be 4 years long and worth a reported £7.7m.

The move is likely to cause mixed feelings for United fans. On one hand, Di Maria is being sold quickly after an abysmal season, and Louis Van Gaal is right to cash in on a player as fast as possible. He didn't breathe life into the United season like they had hoped, so making as much money back on him seems like the logical thing to do. The problem is that 27 games is hardly enough time for a player from La Liga to settle into the much tougher Premier League. The physicality of the English game is completely different to that of Spain. Take a look as Mesut Ozil for instance. The German playmaker had an average season by his standards but worked hard to build muscle and adapt to the stronger players. Ideally, United should have been looking to do something similar, but LVG's cut-throat style of management means that Di Maria's first mis-firing season would also be his last. It certainly isn't fair to just drop a player after one year, but when there's such lofty expectation of a club with such a rich history of winning, sacrifices must be made in order for the team to progress.
