After defeating the Houston Rockets comfortably in a game five that was less exciting and more bad karma for Houston actually making the playoffs, the Golden State Warriors opened their doors to offers for part assistant coach part head coach Luke Walton.
With incumbent head coach Steve Kerr missing a large portion of the season through back injury, Walton was elected to lead the team in their search for back to back championships.
The Warriors continued to play like nothing had ever changed, starting the season with a 24-0 record before ultimately falling to the Milwaukee Bucks on the second night of a back to back.
In fact, interim head coach Walton lead the team to a better record than Kerr with the former securing a 39-4 record.
Many called for Walton to be considered for Coach of the Year nominations however the NBA asserted that Walton's wins technically didn't count since he was standing in for a coach that wasn't technically relieved of his duty.
As the interim head coach, Walton didn't actually win any games. His record remains 0-0 as a coach in the league.
The former Laker, who is still young enough to play in the league at 36, will be the first 1980s born head coach to manage a professional American sporting team.
In an ironic twist, Walton won the same amount of games this season alone as Byron Scott's two year tenure with the Lakers. He amassed an embarrassing 38-126 record, most of which is attributed to the Kobe Bryant farewell tour.
